I was working with somebody the other day who had shared with me that they lost their motivation to do some of the work they knew they needed to do in order to grow their business.
Every day they would get up, know they made commitments and could not find the energy or drive to do the work…complete lack of motivation.
We talked about the root cause…anything out of balance…team dynamics…
…this was something personal…the cause was not evident.
I've been here many times and started discussing various methods of changing the story and forming a new kind of attitude and perspective towards what they were experiencing.
Something needed to change…or nothing would change…
Small changes in your routine....gratitude practices, new exercise routines, morning affirmations, spending time with family, friends, etc. can be effective when things are out of balance…but...
All of them require Discipline.
This made me think back to my original relationship with that word -> I had an intensely negative association with that word.
☠ It was punitive…punishing….controlling…usually coming from someone with authority…which felt controlling.
Over time, I realized that all the real changes in my life…moving out of my comfort zone to affect significant differences came from Discipline!
❤️ Now -> I love the word Discipline!
I talk about it often with teams and when I am working one on one…and most importantly, I use it and live it to affect the changes and outcomes I’m striving for in my life.
These are real world examples of some of the default thoughts I have and how I use discipline...(not proud of them...but here they are :)
Alarm goes off…initial reaction: I’d rather go back to sleep…
👉 Discipline -> get up and work out anyway
When we do not hit our target numbers each week…
initial reaction: ->maybe next week will be better…
👉 Discipline -> do root cause analysis and figure out what need to change
Learning block on my calendar...
initial reaction: -> I’m tired. Maybe I’ll watch the next season of [name that show]
👉 Discipline -> listen to the podcasts your committed to for learning and growth
Motivation, passion and energy can wax and wane.
Discipline is the driving force of change.
