I’m always looking for ways to stay connected with my teenage son…and being a parent, looking for ways to introduce him to the world.
He loves to code and build games…but commercially viable games need to attract customers, have solid marketing…and be profitable.
The most recent thing is playing Red Redemption 2 with him. In between him wincing in pain watching me play (I’m not as good a shot as he is) we talk about the business attributes of the game.
6+ years in production
Costs to produce the game estimated at $540m
North of 61m units sold with net profits estimated at over $1.7b
We discuss the technology of their platform vs the Unreal or Unity platforms…and more…
The various teams involved from graphics, writers, coders, marketing and sales, etc…
…and of course, train robberies and gun fights ;)
It’s a fun way to connect…and helps me introduce to him what can be boring topics into a business space he is really interested in.
