I Broke My Engineer

Updated: Nov 5

I had a client talking to me about one of their top engineers….a ‘superstar’ who was just not producing. Many conversations and (too much) time later and things were not getting better.

When we started digging deeper, it turned out that the engineer in question had been promoted early that year.  It was a promotion they wanted and earned…but…

Even though they wanted the role they did not really understand what it entailed and likely what it would feel like.

This happens…pretty often.

In this case, we worked together to make some adjustments to a couple of roles to shift some responsibilities around.  This enabled the engineer to stay in their highly productive zone…and the problem was solved.

Sometimes people just needed additional training,

In some cases, it’s not that easy.

It is important to help people grow in an organization but you want to make sure they grow into the right place.
