Different is Hard -> Prepare for Change

Not sure when I first heard the expression:

"Life is what happens while you're making other plans"

Change is inevitable and often outside of our control.

The necessity for change for a healthy business is not always about growth and efficiency, it can be for survival...

...but it's so important when implementing new processes, automation, etc. that there is proper preparation for changes being put into place.

After all, no matter how much more efficient a new way of doing things might be, "Different is Hard" -> until is isn't anymore...then it is the new normal.

I was working with a client years back that had a very successful food delivery service. They had very personalized services dealing with many variables.

Everything was managed with pen and paper. Several binders with colored post it notes, etc....almost no automation and no software except some emails and docs.

Their systems worked great and the had excellent customer satisfaction...but they could not scale this.

The two challenges were:

  1. Automate:

Buy or build a software system to automate and managed what they were doing on paper...and...

  2. Prepare for Change -> have a migration plan

Design and implement a process to migrate from the old way to the new way with no interruption in the quality of service they were providing for their customers.

How do you prepare your team(s) for change?
