The most meaningful and positive things that have happened in my life have been around relationships…people.
My commitment for this quarter is to meet new people and build meaningful connections…something well outside my comfort zone…
I have a lot of tools in my toolbox for helping others get out of their comfort zone and moving forward with their goals…but I knew I needed some help with this one.
I talked to many different groups to really try and and accelerate this process. I was fortunate enough to meet Lewis Schiff, the founder of the “Birthing of Giants Fellowship Program - BoG”.
The BoG is a 5 day program with learning, socializing and pushing the limits of your vision for your business.
Each day you have to come up with a plan for what your business will look like one year from today - IYFT - and present it to your peers.
On the last day, this ITFT pitch is made in front of a panel of self made very successful entrepreneurs who call themselves “murders row” for some stern candid feedback...a pretty intense environment.
This checked a lot of boxes for me:
24 business owners all trying to challenge themselves, learn and grow
=> grow my network
Learning
=> particularly in capital markets and private equity
Lots of networking and opportunities for connection
=> exercise relationship building
The One Year from Today Presentation to Murders Row
=> being vulnerable, putting yourself out for constructive criticism
It was a bit of an emotional meat grinder - each day coming up with a new vision or honing an existing one; having your peers poke holes in your assumptions, provide insights that I did not see both in the business and for me personally.
It was also rewarding to be giving insights and asking probing questions and seeing the lights go for others…contributing to their journey as they were contributing to mine.
On the final day, I was the 2nd before last person to present…lots of time to churn ;)
I followed my heart, lots of inspiration from the room and had a really connected engagement with the folks on murders row!
There are two takeaways I hope people come away with from this story:
A plug for the powerful experience that Lewis Schiff and the crew of Birthing of Giants has put together. I highly recommend this! It was a great experience for me…and it’s only just started.
The importance of getting outside your comfort zone to make transformational changes in your life. Be courageous…it works!
I challenged myself to do something a bit scary and came away with new perspectives about myself that I did not see before. I not only met many sharp like minded people but made meaningful connections with that I look forward to continuing on building on those relationships in the future.
